Painting Martin Irons

Do you remember the Drums pin-up I made a few months ago, right? Yeah, this one:
Ok, today I'll explain basically how I did it.

So, my friend El Torres, who wrote this mini-series published by Image, asked through Facebook who wanted to make a pin-up of their characters. I had some free time (which is very rare in these times!) so I said to him "I'm in!" and I started to think about something cool to work.

I used Photoshop CS5 for this work and several brushes I use regularly. Let's start!

Empecemos!

1) I made a canvas with the size of the page specifications from Image, I created a layer and then I drew the classic four points grid (or nine cells grid, depending if you are penciller, painter, graphic designer or photographer... you know what I mean! It's the so-called Rule of thirds) to work on the composition. I had an idea on my head so I started to play around with the brush which emulate a pencil. As you can see, I moved the grid to make some place to Martin's hand (yeah, I cheated! ha). This is just an sketch, but the advantage of work 100% in digital is that the sketched stuff is quite useful to the final work.

2) I created another layer where I started to paint the basic tones of the character. In this case I paint from darks to lights, always using gray tones. I made another layer placed behind the character, so if I paint it wrong I can erase it without erase anything I don't want. It's something obvious thats at this point everything is gray, I'll work on the color balance later.

3) I add some more light and I stablish a better idea about where comes the light from.

4) Last layer of light, where I define some details about Martin's face, hands and clothes. Also, I changed the color scheme of the background, just to start to separate the objects.

5) Well, the color process has begun! In Martin's layer I switched red and yellow balances, in the layer behind him I started to add some ocre color. As you can see, the "behind" layer (which is not the background of the canvas) is used also to define the shape of the character.

6) I added the first texture and then I switched that layer using the "soft light" fusion option. As you know, most of my work is based on scratches, dirt and dust, just like you see the world through a dirty glass. Depending of the texture and the amount of dirt  I want to add, I low down the opacity of his layer, I use the blur brush (on the layer behind the texture) to pop up some parts and I soft my pen brush to make some "fog", as you can see at Martin's right arm. Also, I'm working with dodge and burn brushes to make a strong contrast between light and shadows.

I suggest to make your own textures, but Internet has plenty of images you can use. Remember, if you are taking a texture from someone else, ask permission and credit the guy who made it.

No seas ladrón.

7) I add two or three more textures using the same process I explained in step 6. At this point of the process you have to know what to do and if you know your textures, then you know how to play around. And if you want to experiment with fusion options, color balances and brushes options, you will know that the posibilities are almost infinite. It's the best part of the use of textures, and the risky one too. If you don't know when stop, you could ruin your work.

8) Some details here and there and the work is done! As you can see, I turned Martin gray again (his layer, not the entire image section). Why I did that? Well, I guess Martin's psychology is very different from their surroundings, so I tried to keep that in mind from the beginning. He's a man with a method, as most of FBI agents, but he's at an environment which keeps their own methods. You just read the comic!

By the way, Drums #4 is right now on stores. And yeah, this pin-up is inside of the book. Thanks for watch!
