27: about awards and pre-orders

Alright, I'm going to talk a little bit about my last big effort as freelance artist: the 27 saga. As you know, 27 is composed by two 4 issues mini-series, published by Image/Shadowline between 2010 and 2012. The first mini was out between December 2010 and March 2011, and then was compiled and named as 27: First Set. The second one was released between September and December of 2011 and finally will be released next April as TPB under the name of 27: Second Set. Easy enough to remember, huh?

As I wrote before, I'm quite happy about these bunch of pages. And I'm pretty sure that Charles Soule, W. Scott Forbes and Shawn DePasquale are happy as well. After psycho sell-outs, maniac prices on E-bay and a mountain of big reviews and support, the books opened a lot of doors and opportunities for us and people finally is seeing the love we put on Will Garland's journey.

The results of the good and kind word of readers, critics, journalists and editors are placed in several levels. One of those levels is the award system. So in one hand, I'm glad to tell you that 27: First Set was officially selected as a 2012 YALSA Great Graphic Novel for Teens. YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association) is a group within the ALA (American Library Association), and they select every year those books they think could be most attractive for readers between 12 and 18 years old. You can see the list here. 

In the other hand, this is the second consecutive year I'm pre-nominated to the Eagle Awards under the category Favourite Newcomer Artist. If you don't know what I'm talking about, the Eagles are the comics industry’s longest established awards. The selection process is made by an online poll that you can fill here, so if you have some free time go there and vote me under the Q2 section. Charles Soule is pre-nominated as Favourite Writer (Q3), Jim Valentino is on the Favourite Editor category (Q10), W. Scott Forbes is pre-nominated as Favourite 2011 Cover (Q22) and the whole team of 27: First Set is on the Q24 category, which is Favourite Reprint compilation. If we collect enough votes, we can go to the final list of nominated artists, publishers and books, so feel free to spread the word!

Anyway, let me tell you it's something funny to be pre-nominated as "Newcomer" (twice!), having in mind I'm working on the english comic field since 2003. But hey, I see the bright side of things and I prefer to think that my work is something new for reader's eyes, hehe. I'm being optimistic because I always think I didn't work on my best project yet.

And finally, we come to the Second Set. As I said above, the compilation of the 4 issues sequel (plus a bunch of extras and suprises) will be released next April, so you can pre-order through Diamond Previews catalog. It will be even more 27 if you like. It all depends on you, of course. If you saw the end of the Second Set, you can assume we close the saga in a way... but leaving the door open.

If I have to be honest with you, I'm anxious to start to draw Garland's quiff again.

Muy bien, voy a hablarles un poco acerca de mi último gran esfuerzo como dibujante freelance: la saga de 27. Como ya se sabe, 27 está compuesta por dos mini-series de 4 capítulos cada una, publicadas entre 2010 y 2012 por Image/Shadowline. Como ya escribí antes, estoy muy contento con ese montón de páginas. Y estoy seguro que Charles Soule, W. Scott Forbes y Shawn DePasquale también están contentos. Después de agotar números de manera psicótica, de precios maníacos en E-bay y una montaña de buenas críticas y apoyo, los libros nos abrieron un montón de puertas y oportunidades a todos y la gente finalmente está viendo el amor que le pusimos a la gran aventura de Will Garland.

Los resultados de las buenas y amables palabras de lectores, críticos, periodistas y editores están ubicadas en diferentes niveles. Uno de esos niveles es el sistema de premiaciones. Así que por un lado, me alegra contar que 27: First Set fue oficialmente seleccionada por la YALSA como una de las Great Graphic Novel for Teens del 2012. Soy optimista porque siempre estoy pensando que aún no hice mi mejor trabajo.
